Ciprofloxacin, being the generic name of Cipro, is considered one of the widest known and most effective antibiotics available in the market for several years now.
Cipro, also available in several brand names such as Ciproxin and Ciprobay, is a type of a fluoroquinolone antibiotic classification. It also has a similar chemical component with that of Levofloxacin, Oxyfloxacin, and the like. Manufactured and distributed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, it has been approved by the FDA since 1987 which implies that it has been part of the pharmaceutical world for several decades now.
Indications
Ciprofloxacin works as an antibiotic which kills the bacteria by inhibiting DNA replication and growth. Cipro is most effective against hospital-acquired pneumonia, influenza, gonorrhea, E. coli infection of the urinary tract and many other bacteria which are the common causes of communicable diseases today. It is also prescribed for treating infectious diarrheas caused by E. coli, campylobacter, shigella, and the like.
Availability
This drug is available in several preparations but the most commonly used stock is the tablet form of the drug. It can also be administered via intravenous route which is commonly used for more serious treatment of infections. Cipro is also available under several generic brands which are slightly lighter as to the price. One also needs a prescription from the physician in order to buy it from the pharmacy.
Drug Interaction
Ciprofloxacin, just like any other drugs, has several drug-drug and drug-food interactions. First, it has a negative effect when taken with theophylline- a drug used for treatment of respiratory disorders such as asthma. When taken together, it may cause elevated and toxic theophylline levels in the blood. Toxic levels of this anti-asthma drug can cause neurologic and cardiovascular disturbances such as seizures and arrhythmias/ dysrhythmias.
Ferrous sulfates, magnesium and antacid can weaken the absorption of Ciprofloxacin thereby decreasing the therapeutic effects of the drug. To avoid this malabsorption, this drug should be taken two hours before or six hours after. The same way, orange juice and milk also lessens the effect of this antibiotic and the same hour interval should be followed, as well.
Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated for pregnant women because its teratogenic effect to the fetus is still undetermined by tests. Also, nursing mothers as not allowed to take this antibiotic because the effect of this medication can be passed through the mother’s milk.
Side Effects and Adverse Effects
Cipro should never be administered to patients with neurologic disorders such as seizures because it has a side effect on the neurologic status of the patient and has been correlated with the occurrences of seizures.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, etc. Allergic reactions to this drug are rare cases but may accompany hives, itching and anaphylactic shock. Vigorous exercises and heavy routines have been discouraged for someone taking Cipro because it has been linked with tendinitis or inflammation of the tendons, most especially that in the Achilles Heel.
Normally, the patient taking this drug can experience photosensitivity which means that sun glasses and sun screen should be used when taking it. Failure to do so may cause you some sunburns and irritation when exposed to extreme light.
Considerations
It is not uncommon that at times, we forget to take our daily dose of antibiotic. In this case, once you realize that you have forgotten to take the dose, take it immediately, If in case the next dose is just a few hours away, you may cross the missed dose out and resume taking it the regular basis.
